For Immediate Release: Date: Nov. 3, 2009

MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY SSWO IS ‘FREEZIN’ FOR A REASON’ NOV. 18

The Minot State University Student Social Work Organization is sponsoring “Freezin’ for a Reason” at the Town & Country Center parking lot on Nov. 18 from noon to 9 p.m. “Freezin’ for a Reason,” which is an annual event, raises awareness of homelessness in the community and gathers food items for the Minot Area Homeless Coalition and local food pantries.

"The reason I got involved this year is because I wanted to be part of raising awareness of a population that is often overlooked. Many people, like myself, initially are not aware that homeless people even exist in Minot," said Renelou Gonzalez, a senior social work major from San Francisco, Calif.

The participants stand in the cold and “freeze” to receive a firsthand experience of what homelessness is like. You can be a part of the effort by dropping off food or monetary contributions at the parking lot or by “freezin’” with the SSWO members. The Minot Area Homeless Coalition and SSWO are holding the event as part of the National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, Nov. 15-21.

For questions or additional information about “Freezin’ for a Reason,” contact Debra Dewitz, SSWO’s faculty advisor and assistant professor of social work, at 858-4259 or debra.dewitz@minotstateu.edu or SSWO members at sswo@minotstateu.edu.
