DHS eyes fee-based 'clearinghouse' to validate new surface transport technologies

DHS has recently released a sweeping 24-page assessment it has conducted of the nation's programs to safeguard mass transit, rail, bus and other modes of "surface transportation," which recommends that TSA establish a fee-based "clearinghouse" to validate that privately developed security technologies actually meet federal standards.

That recommendation, No. 13 on a laundry list of 20, was one of two recommendations in the department's Surface Transportation Security Priority Assessment that focused specifically on the private sector's involvement in surface transportation security. The other recommendation called on private industry to take more advantage of two existing programs, SECURE (which stands for Systems Efficacy through Commercialization, Utilization, Relevance and Evaluation) and FutureTECH. Those programs are intended to provide structured models for DHS to work with private industry to develop innovative technologies that align with the needs of the DHS operating components, as well as with other first responders and owners and operators of transportation systems.
