General Information

Sarah Martinsen’s family thanks MSU community

Our family would like to express our deep gratitude to all of you at MSU for the kindnesses you have extended to our family since the time of the death of our daughter and sister, Sarah Martinsen. You surrounded us with support, phone calls, cards, attendance at the funeral and generous donations to the scholarship fund we have established in Sarah’s name. It was astounding to see how many people chose to celebrate Sarah’s life. You can never truly know how much it has meant to us, how it has moved us and strengthened us at this time. Thank you for each gesture you have made to us.

--Wayne Martinsen, Alexis Martinsen, Galit DeWitz and Deb DeWitz

Nationally renowned speaker and author of ‘Mighty Long Way’ to visit MSU
On Feb. 1, 2011, Carlotta Walls LaNier will speak at Minot State University. LaNier is a member of the Little Rock Nine and has written a powerful book, “Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School,” about her experiences (/littlerock9.com/CarlottaWalls.aspx ). Her presentation is being co-sponsored by the University Diversity Committee and the Center for Engaged Teaching and Learning.

A one-credit elective course will be offered in the spring of 2011 for those students interested in forming book discussion groups. Free copies of the book are available to the first 100 students who register for the course. In addition, faculty members are encouraged to include LaNier’s presentation and/or book into courses that are a good match for the content. Faculty and staff members who are interested in obtaining a copy of the book may contact Julie Keller, CETL administrative assistant, at julie.keller@minotstateu.edu or 858-4040 no later than May 1.

Give us your course and book information for summer semester 2010 and for fall semester 2010 as soon as possible. Notifying the Office of Student Life or faculty members through the Office of Public Information (using this format or by any other means) does not constitute an excused absence. Whenever a student anticipates an absence, he/she should contact the appropriate faculty member prior to missing class.

It is up to the discretion of the faculty member whether students will be excused from class or allowed to make up any missed work. Each faculty member establishes his/her own guidelines regarding class absence, and whether or not a student will be allowed to make up missed work.*
